Telling working class stories through film & photo since 2012

Coalfield Studios was set up by filmmaker Carl Joyce, who’s originally from Horden.

A lot of our work is rooted in the East Durham area, especially in the former pit villages that are often overlooked. Over time, we’ve built real relationships with these communities, allowing us to work closely with people who can be wary of outsiders.

In May 2024, our self-funded documentary The School on Seaside Lane picked up Best Documentary at the Sunderland Film Festival and has since been screened across Europe.

Alongside our own films, we document projects for artists and arts organisations across the region, recently working with the likes of English Heritage, Shelter, Northern Heartlands and No More Nowt.

If you’re interested in collaborating on a project with us, please get in touch via phone or email
