Horden’s Fight Is Everyone’s Fight
Directed by Carl Joyce
Produced with Shelter
In Horden, a former mining village on the Durham coast, the Numbered Streets are under threat. As plans are made to knock them down, the people who live there are standing their ground and fighting to keep their homes, their community, and their sense of belonging.
Built around the voices of local residents, the film follows a place that’s been here before, shaped by hard work, pride and looking out for each other.

COAST
Directed by Carl Joyce
Produced with Durham University
Set along the coast of East Durham, COAST follows the everyday realities of getting from A to B in places where options are limited and nothing is quite straightforward.
Walking, cycling and catching the bus become ways of seeing how people really move through their lives and what gets in the way.
Spending time alongside people in places like Horden and Peterlee, the film pays attention to the small, often overlooked details: planning routes, feeling unsafe on familiar streets or adjusting to life on a mobility scooter or wheelchair.

The Heart of the Headland
Directed by Carl Joyce & John Coburn Produced with DigVentures
Set on Hartlepool Headland, Heart of the Headland explores the life and legacy of St Hild, who she was, what she stood for, and why her story still matters.
Moving between past and present the film looks at the deep connection between St Hild, St Hilda’s Church and the community that has grown around it.
Alongside the history, the film follows the ongoing regeneration of the church as it becomes a more open, community-led space

See you in the Garden
Directed by Carl Joyce
Produced with Just Let Your Soul Grow
Set across three community gardens in Sunderland, See You in the Garden is about what happens when people are given space to slow down and spend time together.
These are places people come to learn, share stories, and look after each other as much as they come to grow food.
The film captures moments of connection, care and quiet change.
See You in the Garden shows how these shared spaces offer something simple but powerful: a sense of belonging and purpose.

UP Above
Directed by Carl Joyce
Produced with Durham University
Up Above explores the connection people in the North East have with space, from backyard stargazers to those dreaming of space travel.
The film follows five individuals, each on their own journey, looking up and finding meaning and curiosity in what’s beyond the everyday.

Where We Belong
Directed by Carl Joyce
Produced with No More Nowt
Returning for a second series, Where We Belong turns its focus to the traditions that grew out of pit life and the reasons they still matter now.
The films look at how these traditions helped hold communities together during the mining years, and how they continue to do that work today.
Set in former pit villages, the series follows people keeping these practices alive, not out of nostalgia, but because they still bring people together.
